Ububele is an Nguni word meaning kindness or generosity. The Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust, founded in 1999, is a mental health training, intervention and research organisation based on the edge of Alexandra Township, a densely populated, largely impoverished black settlement in the north of Johannesburg. The focus is on developing, running and disseminating training interventions emphasising preventative mental health strategies for infants and children under the age of seven and their caregivers. We have developed successful intervention models focussed specifically on the ‘First 1000 Days’. In addition we are carrying out research on our home visiting project and the Ububele Baby Mat Service.
- The Ububele Baby Mat Service has benefitted over 5000 individuals (infants and caregivers) in Alexandra and greater Johannesburg. - The Mother-Infant Home Visiting Project has benefitted 1110 individuals in Alexandra since inception in 2011 - Overall in 2015, we directly reached 3482 disadvantaged and vulnerable beneficiaries.
